YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for stores: which videos actually sell

Map videos to products, put the right video on the product page, and read the sales association honestly with direct, assisted and unknown labels.

Most stores make video because they are told to. Few can say which videos led to an order, which products have no video at all, and which comments under a video were actually purchase questions. This post walks through how a store connects YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to its workspace, maps videos to products, puts the right video on the right product page, and reads the sales association honestly, without pretending a view caused a purchase.

Connect the channels, keep the credentials in the workspace

Each channel connects through its own sign-in. YouTube asks for permissions in tiers: read the channel and its analytics first, comments second, metadata changes third. TikTok connects a creator account and, separately, an advertiser account. Instagram comes through the Facebook Page it is linked to.

Once connected, the workspace syncs video metadata, statistics, comments and daily analytics on a schedule. Nothing is written back to a channel without a permission setting and an approval. The credentials stay inside the workspace, so when the owner later asks Claude or ChatGPT about a video, the assistant never holds a token.

Map videos to products

A video about a specific product is worth more on that product's page than on a channel page nobody visits. The mapping step is where that link is made.

The YouTube module scans each public, embeddable video and compares its title, description and tags with the live product catalog: titles, descriptions, vendor, product type, SKU and variant facts. One video can map to several products. One product can collect several videos. Inventory does not decide eligibility; a sold-out product can still carry its video.

The scan produces suggestions with a confidence level. You approve or reject them. Or you write a keyword rule ("videos containing Vista map to Vista products") and choose whether that rule reports, suggests, or approves automatically. A weekly scan runs by default so new uploads get matched.

Approving a mapping changes nothing on the store. Publishing is a separate step.

Put the video on the product page

For Shopify stores, an approved mapping can be published to a related-videos block on the product page. The block shows thumbnails, never autoplays, and only loads the video player after a shopper clicks play, so it does not slow the page. Each card links to that exact video's watch page and nowhere else.

Auto-publish is off until an admin has verified the theme block is placed and acknowledged it. Before that, every publish is manual. The safe path is to pilot one product, check it on desktop and mobile, then turn automation on.

Separately, the workspace can suggest tracked product links for the video description, so a click from YouTube to the product page carries a parameter naming the video. That is what lets the pixel later say which video the visitor came from.

Read the sales association honestly

This is where most video reporting goes wrong, so the labels matter.

The pixel records visits that arrive from a video, follows them through product views, carts and checkout, and joins them to verified orders. The YouTube report then uses three labels:

LabelMeaning
Direct-attributedYouTube was the last known source and this video was the latest identified video touch
AssistedThe video appeared earlier in the trail but another source closed the sale, or the shopper touched more than one video
Unknown videoThe source was YouTube but the specific video cannot be proven

Assisted orders can appear under more than one video, so they are never added together as revenue. Paid video campaigns are excluded and belong in the advertising reports. A zero can mean weak tagging or a short history rather than "no effect." The report says so.

Say your store has 40 videos and 900 orders in a quarter. An illustrative result might show six videos directly attributed to 70 orders, another dozen assisting 150 more, and half the catalog's top-selling products with no video at all. Each of those is a different decision.

Find the gaps

The product-gap view is often more useful than the winners list. It shows products with sales, interest or bought-together affinity and no identified video in the trail. Those are the videos to make next.

The Recommendations page turns that into a short list: make a video for a high-traffic, low-conversion product; answer the question customers keep asking in comments; turn a strong video into a blog post; test a strong organic video as paid creative. Each recommendation names its evidence and whether it needs approval. Approving one creates a calendar idea; it does not publish anything.

TikTok and Instagram: what is measurable today

TikTok is honest about its limits, and so is the workspace. Public video counters (views, likes, comments, shares) sync from a connected creator account. Ad spend, campaign performance and creative previews come from the advertiser connection. Server-side conversion events can be sent to TikTok's Events API from the pixel. Comment replies are drafted for you to post by hand, because TikTok does not allow automated comment writes for most apps, and the workspace does not pretend otherwise.

Instagram and Facebook videos are stored as a permanent media library with metrics, searchable across the whole history, with a per-item note of any spend used to boost it. Comments on posts and ads flow into the shared inbox.

The pixel measures all three the same way: a visit that lands from a video, tagged so the video is known, followed to an order.

Comments are purchase questions

A large share of video comments are questions with a product behind them: does this fit, does it come in black, do you ship to Canada. Those land in the Communications Center as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram conversations beside the email inbox.

Public-comment drafts follow stricter rules than email. Plain text only, no order lookups, never a personal detail. A reply posts only after a person approves it, and the store's own reply is recognized when the platform echoes it back, so the thread resolves instead of looping.

The recurring questions feed back into the content plan. If twenty comments ask the same fitment question, that is a video.

Ask the assistant

With Workspace MCP connected, the owner can ask in plain language: "Which organic YouTube videos are associated with orders this quarter, keep direct and assisted separate, and show the products with no video coverage." Or: "Create a report-only rule that matches Vista videos to Vista products, then run it." Reads answer immediately. A title change, a public reply or a publish is shown as an exact proposal and waits for a yes.

Where to start

Connect the channels and let the sync fill in. Turn on the pixel if it is not already there, and get tracked links into the video descriptions, because associations only start when the visit can be tied to a video. Then approve the first batch of mappings, publish one product page, and read the association report after a month with the three labels in mind.
